So I'm trying to keep a weekly column going in the Ypsilanti Community News, focusing on interesting stuff going on around town. The normal briefs and stories don't always get news of the "alternative" out there, and this is a way to let people know what's coming up that they might not otherwise hear about.
But to keep this up I need more info about events... art shows, openings, concerts, backyard demolition derby, anything cool people in town might want to do or see. The catch is, for deadline, I need this stuff a week in advance. If you want to see it on Sunday, I have to know about it by that Tuesday afternoon.
So, anything good?
I realize it's too late for this already, but I figured this would be the right spot to post it:
On Saturday, 5/26, Gordon's Five & Dime will be celebrating our 2nd Birthday. We'll have cupcakes (made by the Queen of Hearts), gift bags, party favors, special giveaways and sales all day. Thanks to all of you who come by regularly; it's always great to see your smiling faces.
Hi Jordan, hope you will include the Sustainable Ypsilanti film series at the Corner Brewery -- our first two films were well attended and two more will happen June 26 and July 24. Next up, The End of Suburbia and finally, An Inconvenient Truth. More info on both www.sustainableypsi.org and here: http://downtownypsi.org/talk/comments.php?DiscussionID=50&page=1#Item_0
Unfortunately it's too late for the 26th (since our next issue is Sunday), but I will be sure to include the film on July 24. If you remember could you (or someone) send me some info closer to the date? That would be great.
two upcoming events:
Matt Jones, Blake Miller, Julie Sokolow, the Liquid Music Ensemble at the Dreamland Theater June 12
Real Live Tigers, Jen Wilke, Jim Cherwick at the Dreamland Theater June 18
Sorry about the short notice! Trying to help the Dreamland promote some of these shows as they otherwise seem to be working on word of mouth alone...
So Dreamland's new location is open?
Yup! Believe the official opening was on Friday night for Patrick Elkins' CD release party.
It looked to me like renovations were almost complete -- a tiny bit of painting remained and the front area was a little cluttered. Not sure if they have regular hours, but I can vouch that they have a few upcoming shows scheduled and currently have an art show on display.
Do you know if the events (an improv show, a puppet show, parts of Totally Awesomefest) we previewed earlier this spring in the paper at the Dreamland actually happened? I heard they didn't, but I wasn't sure.
Believe the improv and puppet shows were canceled and/or rescheduled, though I'm not positive.
Know that Totally Awesome Fest happened, though nothing was held at the Dreamland. Rumor was that Dreamland was unable to secure a certificate of occupancy from the city in time to host the shows scheduled for TAF3, hence the first night moving to a house on Prospect and the following nights to a recording studio.
I'm under the impression that the building was in a little worse shape than Naia originally expected and that some of the related bureaucratic steps took quite a bit longer than expected, though that's really only an assumption on my part. I'm little more than an eavesdropper who has friends and acquaintances booking and playing shows there...
