    Flash/PHP/MySQL Application Developer Needed

The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)
currently has the need for an application developer who specializes in Flash/PHP/MySQL development.

In early 2009, UMMA will complete a $35.4 million facility expansion and renovation project that will more than double its current size and truly transform the 60-year old Museum—with dramatically expanded collections and exhibitions galleries, educational spaces to serve multiple audiences concurrently, state-of-the-art art storage and conservation, and new visitor services and amenities. UMMA has committed itself to fostering a visitor-directed experience of the visual arts, one that includes layered multimedia approaches, features a wide variety of voices, viewpoints, and narratives, and seeks to connect the visual to the performing arts and to lived experience.

One element in this new approach is a new model for the provision of “object access” making available thousands of additional treasures not on gallery display in the form of “open-storage” galleries. Open-storage will include some 1,200 works of art on two floors, object-study classrooms for works on paper and three-dimensional works of art, and web-based access to the entirety of UMMA’s collections in digital form.

Working towards this effort, UMMA wishes to develop web-based utilities allowing users to search and browse the objects in the collection. This is a multi-tiered project and at this time we require the backend functionality of a simple search form and an advanced search form, as well as the results list, and detailed information view. Search results should be returned based on probable likelihood factors. Additionally UMMA wishes to develop an interactive browsing utility based on time and location (as well as some additional criteria). These utilities should be delivered in a raw format and built to accommodate branding styles and layouts that will be determined at a later date and time.

    Details:
-This work is for an independent contractor
-Work should commence by mid May and conclude by the end of August
-Compensation negotiable based on experience and credentials

    Skills required:
-PHP, MySQL, Flash Action Scripting, XML, XSLT, CSS, Javascript

Please provide cover letter, resume, and web portfolio to John Turner (jmturner@umich.edu)
