If you haven't heard yet Pfizer is closing both it's Ann Arbor locations.

What effect do you think this will have on the Ypsi economy? I know it's going to be a big hit to Ann Arbor's.

Yeah, I just saw this as well.

It sounds like they will be open for about 18 months.

While Pfizer is officially located in Ann Arbor, I can't help but think that this is going adversely affect Ypsilanti, as well as other local municipalities where people may have been commuting from.

We'll see. But this is a big blow, indeed.

I have a few friends that work there - I hope they'll be okay.

A big blow to the area. Pfizer is like 3% of AA's tax base..... It makes me scratch my head: The "experts" have been saying all along that Michigan needs to diversify its economy, get away from an automotive-centered view, etc... So here's a big drug research and development site, as hi-tech as it comes, a place that's laden with world class talent in medical science, and POOF! It's shortly gone. Just what the hell is this state going to do?

I was thinking along the same lines, Rob.... So manufacturing is leaving, it's hardly news anymore, but Pfizer R&D, that's huge. The figure I heard yesterday is that they have 2100 employees in Ann Arbor. Either they'll move elsewhere (depress the housing market further, erode area tax base), or competition for decent jobs around here is going to get even stiffer. I'm sure it'll end up being some combo of the two.
