I have 4-5 chairs from the 1930s that I love but a number of them need small repairs: The cross-bars that support the legs have broken on a number of them, or loose legs need to be glued. I bought the correct size dowels and then decided somebody with carpentry experience really needs to do this. (I don't have the tools to drill out the broken dowel ends from the legs, for example.) These are not "antiques" and I'm not asking for restoration, I'm just looking to make them useable.
If somebody wanted to take on this medium sized project, I could barter a variety of things: I made great pies of all kinds (savory & fruit). I could write or edit something or layout a publication or brochure. I could give you a bag of homegrown carrots or green tomatoes. If you have some veggies, I could can or freeze them for you. Ditto for herbs. OR I could teach you to can or preserve. I could help you plan a garden for next year (see http://www.foursquaresociety.blogspot.com). I could spend a couple hours in your yard giving you advice about edible landscapes, bed layout, native plants and wildflowers, etc. I could plant some fall bulbs for you. I could paint some signs for your garden. I could trade you some herbal tinctures, salves & medicines and/or teach you how to make them from your own dooryard herbs. I could make you a couple jars of outstanding winter teas for flu & colds. Hmmm...
